this poem, i love.
my own mother put
a copy of it,
cut from
a book or newspaper,
in my baby book.
once upon a spring
it will be
my belly
rounded
with kicking dreams
wrapped
in delicate lace
touched
with unabashed
ecstasy;
waiting
feeling
growing
with sweet
delicious
life,
with laughter,
with softness,
with absolutely
out-rageous
joy.
once upon a spring
it will be
my belly
strong & firm
jutting out
beneath swollen
hanging breasts
carrying
all that is sacred
all that is cherished
all that is spring.

my favorite things
about being pregnant
finding out i'm pregnant
finding out i'm pregnant
with twins
finding out it's a girl
when i didn't know yet if i
was pregnant or not and
my sister sent me a text
message saying "i need to
know if we are pregnant or
not!"
experiencing my parents
reactions and expressions
when they found out they
were going to be
grandparents
my belly, it's just so
beautiful because i know
what it's there for, even if
it's also always getting so
big
the way daddy looks when
he feels the baby move
when she plays and does
her jumping jacks and
little exercises inside me
making instant other
mommy friends
when i'm in a meeting at
work and everyone is
talking about something
so trivial and i just think
"yea, i'm CARRYING a
CHILD"
the sense of pure well being
waking up each morning to
remember right away that
i'm pregnant and there is a
child inside of me, all mine
watching her wave at me
during an ultrasound,
looking at her perfectly
formed vertebrae
reading about what she's
doing now, what stage
she's in, what she has
developed, what she will
develop
going from first to second,
second to third trimester,
and welcoming the changes
as they occur
eating things i wouldn't
have eaten before
tummy time
the way strangers react, so
nice to see the good side of
humans come out
sitting in her room
the love i feel from my
friends when i see how
much they care |
