REM: RARE & EXPENSIVE MANAGEMENT David Harris, along with many others in Maryland, has experienced a life altering catastrophic event. Dave was paralyzed in a car accident in July of 2004. There are not many assistance programs available that have funds or are able to help when needed. One of the services that has been extremely helpful, is his Rare and Expensive Managment (REM) medical assistance program. This progam has allowed Dave to see any specialist he needs, when he needs to, without the administrative headaches involving referrals, approvals, denials, etc. A case manager has been appointed to Dave to make sure he receives the care and services specifically required for his rare needs as a quadriplegic. As a result of budget cuts, the State of Maryland is trying to do away with this progam, which would force Dave and many others into a Managed Care Medical Assistance Program. Much like an HMO, you need to get approvals and referrals, which makes the specialized care that he needs much more difficult to obtain. Please join us by writing to Governor Ehlrich and pleading with him to keep this state supported REM program in place. This has been one service that has really helped the Harris Family. These traumatic experiences are never easy to deal with, but you can help us make the care for Dave and many others in Maryland easier. Personalized letters have more effect, but if you do not have the time for that, we have drafted a letter for you. Thanks so much for your support.
